Identity theft is the deliberate use of someone else's identity, usually as a method of illegally gaining a financial advantage or obtaining credit and/or other benefits by using another person's name and personal identity information. This can result in a disadvantage or loss to the identify theft victim. The person whose identity has been stolen and assumed may also suffer adverse consequences, both legally and/or financially, especially if they are held legally responsible for the perpetrator's actions.
